The authors use a variational technique to derive the governing equations for dynamical flexoelectricity in elastic homogeneous dielectrics, together with the corresponding boundary conditions. The mathematical formulation is presented, and a second-degree form of the strain energy is suggested that reflects the dynamical flexocoupling between strain gradient and polarization. The study focuses on size-dependent effect for a class of centrosymmetric dielectrics. A one-dimensional application is presented for the half-space, and the solution is obtained by Laplace transform technique under two types of mechanical conditions. Numerical results are presented and discussed for a specific material, and quantities of practical interest are plotted to show the effect of the ratio between the characteristic length of the problem, and the internal length scale corresponding to microinertia.
