In this paper, the authors prove the exact function field analogue of the result by \textit{J. B. Conrey} et al. [Geom. Funct. Anal. 22, No. 5, 1257--1288 (2012; Zbl 1270.11082)] regarding an asymptotic formula for the sixth moment of Dirichlet \(L\)-functions over the rational field \(\mathbb{Q}\). Let \(\mathbb{F}_q\) be a finite field with \(q\) elements and let \(\mathbb{F}_q[t]\) be the ring of polynomials over \(\mathbb{F}_q\). First denote by \(\mathcal{M}\) the set of all monic polynomials in \(\mathbb{F}_q[t]\) and by \(\mathcal{M}_n\) the subset of all monic polynomials of degree \(n \in \mathbb{N}\). Also, denote by \(\mathcal{P}\) the subset of all prime polynomials in \(\mathcal{M}\). The degree of a nonzero polynomial \(N \in \mathbb{F}_q[t]\) is denoted by \(d(N)\) and its norm by \(|N| = q^{d(N)}\). Let \(\chi\) be a Dirichlet character modulo polynomial \(Q \in \mathbb{F}_q[t]\). The Dirichlet \(L\)-function associated to \(\chi\) is defined for \(\mathrm{Re}(s)> 1\) by \[L(s,\chi)=\sum_{N\in \mathcal{M}}\frac{\chi(N)}{|N|^s}=\prod_{P\in \mathcal{P}} \left(1-\frac{\chi(P)}{|P|^s}\right)^{-1}.\] The authors proved the following interesting asymptotic formula as \(d\to \infty\) \[\sum_{Q\in \mathcal{M}_d} \quad \sum_{\chi \:\mathrm{odd}\:(\mathrm{mod} \:Q)} \int_0^{\frac{2\pi}{\log q}}\left|L\left(\frac{1}{2}+it, \chi\right)\right|^6 \frac{dt}{2\pi/\log q}\sim 42\: \tilde{a}_{3, q}\:\frac{q-2}{q-1} q^{2d}\: \frac{d^9}{9!},\] where \[\tilde{a}_{3, q}=\prod_{P\in \mathcal{P}} \left(1-\frac{1}{|P|}\right)^5 \left( 1+\frac{5}{|P|}-\frac{5}{|P|^2}+\frac{14}{|P|^3} -\frac{15}{|P|^4}+\frac{5}{|P|^5}+\frac{4}{|P|^6}-\frac{4}{|P|^7}+\frac{1}{|P|^8}\right).\] Note that the restriction to odd primitive characters \(\chi\) modulo \(Q\) in the above sum is just a technical simplification. But one could also derive analogous results for the family of even characters.
