Results of \textit{A. A. Eldred} and \textit{P. Veeramani} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 323, No. 2, 1001--1006 (2006; Zbl 1105.54021)] and \textit{P. Shunmugaraj} and \textit{V. Thota} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 446, No. 2, 1769--1775 (2017; Zbl 1357.54038)] combine to characterize uniform rotundity of real Banach spaces in terms of two geometric conditions connected to the existence of best proximity points and fixed points. In the article under review, the authors obtain analogous characterizations of weakly uniformly rotund Banach spaces in terms of weaker versions of these two geometric conditions. A pair \((A, B)\) of nonempty subsets of a Banach space \(X\) is said to have \textit{property weakly UC} if the sequence \((x_n-y_n)\) converges weakly to \(0\) whenever \((x_n)\) and \((y_n)\) are sequences in \(A\) and \((z_n)\) is a sequence in \(B\) such that \(\|x_n - z_n\|\to d(A, B)\) and \(\|y_n-z_n\| \to d(A, B)\), where \(d(A, B)\) denotes the distance between \(A\) and \(B\). If \(A\) and \(B\) are nonempty subsets of \(X\), \(A\) is said to be \textit{weakly uniformly strongly Chebyshev on \(B\)} if \(A\) is proximinal at every element of \(B\) and the sequence \((x_n-y_n)\) converges weakly to \(0\) whenever \((x_n)\) and \((y_n)\) are sequences in \(A\) and \((z_n)\) is a sequence in \(B\) such that \(\|x_n - z_n\| - d(z_n,A) \to 0\) and \(\|y_n - z_n\| - d(z_n,A) \to 0\). The authors show that the following conditions are equivalent: (1)\ \(X\) is weakly uniformly rotund. (2)\ If \(A\) and \(B\) are nonempty subsets of \(X\) and \(A\) is convex, then \((A, B)\) has property weakly UC. (3)\ The unit ball \(B_X\) of \(X\) is weakly uniformly strongly Chebyshev on \(X\) (or on \(2S_X\) where \(S_X\) is the unit sphere of \(X\)).
