Let \((X,d_{X})\) and \((Y,d_{Y})\) be two metric spaces. A function \(\ f:~(X,d_{X})\rightarrow (Y,d_{Y})\) is called \(P\)-preserving if for every subset \(A\subset X\) which has the \(P\)-property, its image \(f(A)\) also has the \(P\)-property. It is well known that every continuous function is compactness and connectedness preserving. The natural question here arises under which conditions the converse of the statement is true. There are a lot of results in this direction in the literature, cf. [\textit{J. Gerlits} et al., Topology Appl. 138, No. 1--3, 21--44 (2004; Zbl 1042.54008)]. Later, the problem above has been considered for Cauchy reqular functions. \textit{P. Das} et al. [ibid. 301, Article ID 107499, 14 p. (2021; Zbl 1482.54021)] gave some positive answers and they proved that every Cauchy regular function preserves total boundedness and Cauchy connectedness. Also, certain interesting conditions were shown under which every total boundedness -- and Cauchy connectedness -- preserving function is Cauchy regular. In this paper, an interesting weakening of the notion of completeness, namely pre-straightness, is considered and pre-straight spaces are characterized by considering a suitable metric. Also, Cauchy separated fibers (CSF), which yield Cauchy regularity of a continuous function on a pre-straight space are introduced. Finally, a generalization of Cauchy regular functions, namely Cauchy approachable functions (CA) is defined along the lines of uniformly approachable functions (UA) [\textit{D. Dikranjan} and \textit{J. Pelant}, Quaest. Math. 18, No. 4, 381--396 (1995; Zbl 0864.54024)] and the relationship between CA and CSF functions is obtained. Furthermore, the authors give a possible answer to the open question [Question 3.12], posed in [\textit{A. Berarducci} et al., Topology Appl. 121, No. 1--2, 3--23 (2002; Zbl 1009.54019)].
