Function spaces with variable exponents are widely studied, nowadays mainly in the Euclidean setting. The present paper deals with variable exponent function spaces within the framework of probability spaces. More precisely, the authors study John-Nirenberg type inequalities. Generalized Campanato martingale spaces \(\mathrm{BMO}_{\phi,Y}\), associated to a rearrangement invariant space \(Y\), and generalized Campanato martingale spaces \(\mathrm{BMO}_{\phi,p(\cdot)}\) with variable exponent \(p(\cdot)\) are considered. The main result of the paper asserts that if the stochastic basis is regular and the exponent \(p(\cdot)\) satisfies a certain ``regularity'' condition, then the previous spaces coincide (for appropriate restrictions on the Boyd indices of \(\phi\)). This generalizes and reproves other results already known. In a sense, the condition imposed on the variable exponent \(p(\cdot)\) replaces the standard \(\log\)-Hölder continuity assumption used in the Euclidean setting.
