Special polynomials and numbers have significant roles in various branches of mathematics, theoretical physics, and engineering. The problems arising in mathematical physics and engineering are framed in terms of differential equations. Most of these equations can only be treated by using various families of special polynomials which provide new means of mathematical analysis. They are widely used in computational models of scientific and engineering problems. In addition, these special polynomials allow the derivation of different useful identities straightforwardly and help in introducing new families of special polynomials. \textit{S. M. Roman} and \textit{G.-C. Rota} [Adv. Math. 27, 95--188 (1978; Zbl 0375.05007)] began to construct a rigorous foundation for the classical umbral calculus, which was based on modern concepts like a linear functional, a linear operator, an adjoint, and so on. \textit{E. C. Ihrig} and \textit{M. E. H. Ismail} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 84, 178--207 (1981; Zbl 0479.05003)], and \textit{S. Roman} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 107, 222--254 (1985; Zbl 0654.05004)] considered the $q$-umbral calculus as an extended version of the classical umbral calculus. The $q$-Sheffer sequences occupy the central position in the theory and are characterized by the generating functions, where the $q$-exponential function enters. \textit{D. S. Kim} and \textit{T. Kim} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 493, No. 1, Article ID 124521, 21 p. (2021; Zbl 1471.11110)] introduced the degenerate Sheffer sequence and the $\lambda$-Sheffer sequence. Since then, some mathematicians have been studying many interesting identities by using them. In the related paper, the authors consider the degenerate Sheffer sequence and the $\lambda$-Sheffer sequence. They examine the $\lambda$-$q$-Sheffer sequence and the degenerate $q$-Sheffer sequence, which are derived from the viewpoint of degenerate umbral calculus, and derive some properties related to those sequences. Moreover, the authors provide some properties of degenerate $q$-Bernoulli polynomials of order $r$ and degenerate $q$-Euler polynomials of order $r$ arising from $\lambda$-$q$-umbral calculus. They investigate several formulas for expressing any polynomials as a linear combination of degenerate $q$-Bernoulli polynomials and degenerate $q$-Euler polynomials with explicit coefficients, respectively. The authors establish some connections between degenerate $q$-Bernoulli polynomials (degenerate $q$-Euler polynomials) and higher-order degenerate $q$-Bernoulli polynomials (higher-order degenerate $q$-Euler polynomials).
