The Cauchy problem for the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation is shown to be well posed for the initial data of the form \(V(0,x)+H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})\) where \(V(t,x)\) is a (suitable) solution of KdV. This class of initial data includes e.g. perturbations of periodic traveling waves with \(V(0,.)\in H^5(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})\). The construction uses the concept of commuting flows of \textit{R. Killip} and \textit{M. Vişan} [Ann. Math. (2) 190, No. 1, 249--305 (2019; Zbl 1426.35203)], and depends on suitable approximations.
