Let \(G\) be a linear algebraic group over a field \(F\). Consider the functor \(H^1(-, G):\mathrm{Fields}_F \to\mathrm{Sets}\), where \(\mathrm{Fields}_F\) is the category of field extensions, taking a field \(K\) to the set \(H^1(K, G)\) of isomorphism classes of \(G\)-torsors over Spec \(K\). Let \(H: \mathrm{Fields}_F \to\mathrm{Abelian Groups}\) be another functor. An \(H\)-invariant of \(G\) is then a morphism of functors \(I: H^1(-, G) \to H\), and \(\mathrm{Inv}(G, H)\) denotes the group of \(H\)-invariants of \(G\). An invariant \(I \in\mathrm{Inv}(G, H)\) is called normalized, if \(I(X) = 0\), where \(X\) is the trivial \(G\)-torsor. Normalized invariants form a subgroup \(\mathrm{Inv}(G, H)_ {\mathrm{norm}}\) of \(\mathrm{Inv}(G, H)\) and there is a natural isomorphism \(\mathrm{Inv}(G, H) \cong H(F) \oplus \mathrm{Inv}(G, H)_ {\mathrm{norm}}\). The paper under review considers the functor \(H\) which takes a field \(K/F\) to the Galois cohomology group \(H^n(K, \mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(j))\) with coefficients in the direct sum \(\mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(j)\) of the colimit over \(n\) of the Galois modules \(\mu_n^{\otimes j}\), \(\mu_n\) being the Galois modules of \(n\)-th roots of unity, and a \(p\)-component in the case of \(\mathrm{char}(F) = p > 0\) defined via logarithmic de Rham-Witt differentials. Research interest is focussed on the group \(\mathrm{Inv}^n(G, \mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(j))\) of cohomological invariants of \(G\) of degree \(n\) with coefficients in \(\mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(j)\). The research itself is based on the computations in the motivic étale cohomology of \(\mathbb Z(2)\) for semisimple groups and their classifying spaces, made by the author in a recently published article [Am. J. Math. 138, No. 3, 763--792 (2016; Zbl 1346.14051)]. The main result of the paper under review contains new information on \(\mathrm{Inv}^3(G, \mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(2))_{\mathrm{norms}}\) in the case where \(G\) is a semisimple group. It extends a theorem due to Rost, which determines \(\mathrm{Inv}^ 3(G, \mathbb Q/\mathbb Z(2))_{\mathrm{norm}}\) under the hypothesis that \(G\) is simply connected quasi-simple (see [\textit{S. Garibaldi} et al., Cohomological invariants in Galois cohomology. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2003; Zbl 1159.12311)]). The article under review provides a list of all degree 3 invariants of adjoint groups of inner type.
