In this paper, the authors study, with clearly way, the evolution of the families of simple symmetric periodic orbits in the circular planar restricted three-body problem (RTBP) for whatever value of mass parameter $\mu$. The authors begun from the work of \textit{E. Strömgren} [Bull. Astron., II. Ser. 9, 87--130 (1934; Zbl 0012.12801)], considering the case that the primaries have the same mass equal to $\mu=0.5$, known as Copenhagen problem, and they extend and complete the work of Stromgren. They studied the evolution of periodic orbits for whatever value of mass parameter $\mu\in (0,0.5]$, since there is no analogous and systemic study for unequal masses. They analyzed a new topological classification of the orbits based on what points of primaries and of the five equilibrium points called Lagrange points, the orbit encircles, together with its character, direct or retrograde, and they gave emphasis to asymptotic orbits and the appearance of certain types of orbits such as horseshoe orbits. So, they made a classification of the symmetric periodic orbits and determined subintervals of $\mu$ where some types of families exist and some others not. Finally, they computed, also, the periodic orbits for two particular cases, the Earth-Moon case and the Sun-Jupiter case, for which the mass parameter $\mu$ is actually small, and classify the different types of orbits for these systems.
