Summary: The aim of this note is to present a new nonautonomous chain rule formula for the distributional derivative of the composite function \(v(x)=B(x,u(x))\), where \(u:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}\) is a scalar function of bounded variation and \(B\) admits a special integral form in terms of a locally bounded function \(b(x,t)\), with \(b(\cdot,t)\) of bounded variation. It is an useful tool especially in view to applications to semicontinuity results for integral functional (see [\textit{M. Amar} et al., Adv. Calc. Var. 1, No. 2, 171--191 (2008; Zbl 1146.49008); the author et al., J. Convex Anal. 12, No. 1, 173--185 (2005; Zbl 1115.49011); the author et al., Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 28, No. 4, 427--447 (2007; Zbl 1136.49011); the author and \textit{G. Leoni}, ibid. 19, No. 1, 23--51 (2004; Zbl 1056.49019)]) and to conservation laws (see [\textit{G. Crasta} and the author, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 43, No. 1, 430--456 (2011; Zbl 1229.26020); \textit{G. Crasta} et al., Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 40, No. 4, 694--726 (2015; Zbl 1326.35197)]).
