Summary: We study some extremal properties of the self-similar solutions of certain one-dimensional kinetic models of granular flows, usually known with the name of nonlinear friction equations. This analysis, inspired by some recent results on nonlinear diffusion equations [\textit{J. Dolbeault} and \textit{G. Toscani}, J. Phys. A, Math. Theor. 48, No. 6, Article ID 065206, 14 p. (2015; Zbl 1311.35132)], allows to obtain various sharp inequalities, which can be fruitfully used to better clarify the large-time behavior of the solution density.
