The paper deals with computational solutions of optimization problems of the form \[ \begin{aligned} & \min_{\mathbf{u}_0} J(\mathbf{u}(\cdot,T),\mathbf{u}_d);\\ &\text{subject to}\;\partial_t \mathbf{u}+\partial_x \mathbf{F}(\mathbf{u})=\mathbf{0},\\ &\mathbf{u}(x,t=0)=\mathbf{u}_0(x),\;t\in [0,T),\;x\in (-\infty,\infty), \end{aligned} \] where \(\mathbf{F}:\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}^m \) is a smooth vector-valued flux function. The authors solve the problem using the adjoint based optimization to minimize the matching-time objective functional of the form \[ J(\mathbf{u}(x,T;\mathbf{u}_0),\mathbf{u}_0,\mathbf{u}_d))=\frac 12 \int_\varOmega |\mathbf{u}(x,T,\mathbf{u}_0)-\mathbf{u}_d(x)|^2\,d\varOmega. \] Extensions of the numerical schemes to second-order accuracy for the forward and backward problem are applied.
