Given three sets, \(S_1\), \(S_2\), \(S_3\), of \(n\) real numbers, the classical additive eigenvalue problem asks when there exist two Hermitian \(n\times n\) matrices, \(A\) and \(B\), such that the eigenvalues of \(A\), \(B\), and \(A+B\) are the elements of \(S_1\), \(S_2\), and \(S_3\), respectively. Following partial answers by many mathematicians, the final step in the solution of this problem was provided by the solution of a related combinatorial problem by \textit{A. Knutson} and \textit{T. Tao} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 12, No. 4, 1055--1090 (1999; Zbl 0944.05097)]. This paper gives a brief survey of work on both the classical problem and, more especiallly, its recent generalizations, in the setting of subsets of a connected, semisimple complex algebraic group, and associated Lie algebras. For a more detailed survey of this work, see the author [Transform. Groups 19, No. 4, 1051--1148 (2014; Zbl 1354.14074)].
