The book is focused on backup and recovery principles in Oracle RDBMS associated to its version Oracle8i. The book is structured into 10 chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes backup and recovery procedures in Oracle RDBMS. It justifies also the importance of backup planning for application of a database in practice. Chapter 2 provides a brief summary of basic concepts of Oracle and Oracle system architecture. The chapters 3 and 4 deal with physical and logical backup, respectively. The reader finds here various backup statements and procedures running under various operation systems as e.g. VMS, UNIX, MVS, Windows NT, and OS/2. Chapter 3 is completed by examples of backups in decision support systems and OLTP applications. Logical backup is ensured by programs export and import. These programs make it possible to convert data and its definition into binary data and vice versa. Chapter 5 contains backup example scripts for Windows NT, UNIX, and open VMS.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to recovery. First, an overview of necessary basic data structures basic notions associated with recovery is presented. Then some Oracle recovery options are described. They include database, table space, and data files recovery. The reader finds also an analysis of possible failures here. Chapter 7 describes a tool called recovery manager including its backup and recovery procedures as well as built-in reporting functions.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEChapter 8 is devoted to other effective mechanism for data protection -- replication and its usage for a database. Chapter 9 introduces a number of Oracle tools that make it possible to diagnose data and memory failures as well as performance problems. Moreover, new tools LogMiner and DBMS\(_-\)REPAOR-Package are discussed here. The final chapter 10 completes the book with 22 case studies concerned backup and recovery. These case studies are based on real examples of failures and recovery procedures that are recommended by Oracle-Support.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book contains Appendix containing selected system improvements appearing in the Oracle8i version.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book can be recommended as a handbook either for Oracle users or for database administrators who work with Oracle RDBMs.
