The book belongs to introductory texts about Information Retrieval (IR). It is divided into two main parts. The first part contains an informal representation of foundations of information retrieval area. It could be said that this book part is an outline of a mechanism, which is employed at an information search. What follows as the natural step is that basic components of the mechanism are then introduced in this part. In the play are the components: retrieval models, retrieval processes (ad hoc retrieval, filtering, browsing, retrospective searching, selective dissemination of information, online retrieval, offline retrieval), databases for searching. Further are introduced hosts, retrieval software tools for online searching and retrieval languages. The rest of the first part explains an important question of information retrieval system -- the cost of the online searching.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe second part of the book explains the methods of information retrieval. This explanation and nearing are done using the model retrieval language DSO (DataStarOnline). As essential commands in such language are considered: database choice and database change, search expression and strategy, output of searching, and the end of the online connection. As next are shortly described retrieval tools built up on the basis of Microsoft Windows. Two tools are considered: DataStar for Windows, and Genios InMedia. The rest of the book is devoted to Web-Search. Again, the nearing is done using the model examples; considered are DataStar Web and Genios Web-Search.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe work is not a classical textbook. Rather, it is an basic knowledge set about the discipline the information retrieval. It is strongly oriented on the practical side of IR. This is the 2nd edition of the title. The introduction of the IR questions is attractive.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book is recommended to students, teachers, and practitioners in IR-area, too.
