The authors propose an a posteriori error estimate for the coupling of mixed finite elements and boundary elements to solve a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem of linear plane elasticity. Their error estimator is based on the solution of local elliptic problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions and on a residual term defined on the coupling interface. The general a posteriori error estimate does not make use of any special knowledge about the approximate solution. It comprises a residual term on the coupling interface that has to be evaluated in a negative order Sobolev norm. In practical applications, where a certain boundary element subspace is used, this norm can be estimated by weighted local \(L^2\)-norms.
