The many roads to time-frequency (English)
0 references
The author presents the basic tools and various motivations that led to or can be considered as an explanation for the introduction of time-frequency analysis. It is shown that the intrinsic limitations of Fourier pairs are the reason to introduce apparently unrelated ways to ``marry'' time and frequency with roots not only in signal theory but also in quantum mechanics, statistics or pseudo-differential operator theory. The presentation of the ``many roads to time-frequency'' as well as complementary interpretations in terms of building blocks, covariance, correlations, probabilities and measures, symmetries, devices related to mechanical and optical processing gives the reader a significant image that is helpful for choosing the most appropriate solution for a specific application.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0958.00020].
