The paper addresses a recently introduced model based on a reaction-diffusion (RD) system with mixed spatial dimensions, in which a one-dimensional line of fast diffusion is embedded into a two-dimensional plane controlled by slow diffusion. The system models varies situations of directed invasion of a biological species into an area originally occupied by another species, when rivers or rods serve as conduits for the invasion. A new system is introduced too, which assumes self-reproduction of the invading species along a line immersed into a hostile two-dimensional environment. Applying methods of the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov theory, the paper produces results for the asymptotic propagation speed of fronts traveling along the fast-diffusion line.
