Let the background flow, in which a compression wave is moved, be a homogeneous gas at rest. The gas dynamics system for the corresponding isentropic flow takes the form NEWLINE\[NEWLINE \begin{aligned} &\sigma_t + u\sigma_r + \frac{\gamma - 1}{2}\sigma u_r = -\nu\frac{\gamma - 1}{2}\frac{\sigma u}{r}, \\ &u_t + \frac{2}{\gamma - 1}\sigma\sigma_r + uu_r = 0. \end{aligned} NEWLINE\]NEWLINE Here \(r = \sqrt{\sum_{i = 1}^{\nu + 1}x_i^2}\geq 0\), \(\nu=1\) for plane flow and \(\nu=2\) for axisymmetric flow, \(\sigma = \rho^{(\gamma - 1)/2}\) stands for the sound velocity, \(\rho\) is the density, and \(p\) is the pressure of the gas. The main aim of the article is to determine numerically the width of an initial incompressible layer of a gas which can be compressed without shock effect. In order to find the required characteristics, the author uses the algorithm suggested by \textit{S.~P.~Bautin} and \textit{Yu.~V.~Nikolaev} in [Vychisl. Tekhnol. 5, No. 4, 3-12 (2000; Zbl 1052.76567)].
