In charcteristic \(p>0\) there are fibrations with smooth total space and with general fiber a singular curve with arithmetic genus \(g\); by a theorem of Tate it occurs only if \(p \leq 2g+1\). In this paper the authors solve birationally the case \(g=p=2\), proving the existence of proper morphisms \(\pi : Z\to \mathbb {A}^5\) and \(\mu : V \to \mathbb {A}^6\) such that if \(f: X\to Y\) is a proper map with smooth \(X, Y\) and general fiber of arithmetic genus \(2\) and geometric genus \(1\) (resp. \(0\)), then \(f\) is birationally equivalent to a pull-back of \(f\) (resp. \(\mu\)). They gives complete descriptions of the function fields with are geometrically elliptic or rational, but with arithmetic genus \(2\).
