Thermodynamics of orientation discontinuity surface: Small misorientation approach (English)

By taking into account the influence of grain orientation jump on driving forces of grain reorientation process, the authors present a small misorientation approach to the thermodynamics of orientation discontinuity surface under the low-angle grain boundary assumption. Assuming that the free energy of discontinuity surface depends on the jump in orientation field (both the jumps in elastic and plastic deformation tensors are considered), the authors derive relations between lattice misorientation vector and conjugate thermodynamical forces as a part of the total driving force governing the grain boundary migration process. Here, we only mention, among other things presented in this interesting paper, the kinematics of small deformations with continuous distribution of dislocations, the compatibility conditions for deformation field on the grain boundary, the relations of the dislocation density to the grain misorientation, continuum-thermodynamical aspects of dislocation theory applied to grain boundary reorientation process, and a general form of constitutive equation for grain boundary migration.
