This is volume 4 of an ambitious handbook series on the state-of-art of biophysics; for Vol. 3 see the preceding entry, Zbl 0985.92007. The book's contents start from basic concepts and reach to complex models and ideas. The different chapters are written by world-wide experts in the respective specialized fields (total of 47 from 15 countries). The bibliography after each chapter is impressive. As a whole, this is an encyclopaedia of contemporary neural modelling. The separate sections cover the following topics:NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINESection 1. Statistical and nonlinear dynamics in neuroscience (stochastic resonance, noise and information in biophysical systems; chaos and detection of unstable periodic orbits in biological systems; chaos control in cardiac applications; synchronization; self-organized criticality in biophysical applications). Section 2. Biological physics of neurons and neural networks (biophysical models for biological neurons; introduction to neural networks; learning in neural networks; information coding in neural networks; self-organization in cortex).
