The author studies irreducible hyperkähler fourfolds with maximal possible second Betti number, i.e., \(b_2=23\). The work in this paper is motivated by Beauville's question whether hyperkähler fourfolds with \(b_2=23\) are deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a \(K3\) surface [\textit{A. Beauville}, Springer Proc. Math. 8, 49--63 (2011; Zbl 1231.32012)]. O'Grady specified Beauville's question to the conjecture that if a hyperkähler fourfold is numerically equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a \(K3\) surface, then it is deformation equivalent to it [\textit{K. G. O'Grady}, Commun. Contemp. Math. 10, No. 4, 553--608 (2008; Zbl 1216.14040)]. The author shows that any ample divisor on a hyperkähler manifold as above has self-intersection of the form \(12k^2\) for some integer \(k\). Then he describes relations of hyperkähler manifolds that admit an ample divisor with minimal possible self-intersection to EPW sextics.
