This book is now in its third edition, a fact which clearly bears witness to its success. It was first published in 1987 (see Zbl 0672.15001). As was stated there, it is a text for mathematics students and emphasizes the theoretical algebraic background. The main changes in this edition are: (a) the derivation of the structure theorem for finitely generated abelian groups and of the Jordan normal form by means of representation theory has been substantially simplified, and (b) a further chapter on multilinear forms and exterior algebra has been added.
