This is the introductory article of the ``Handbook of the Geometry of Banach Spaces'' (see Zbl 0970.46011 for the entire collection) written by the editors of that Handbook. Its aim is to make the material presented in the remaining articles of the Handbook accessible to a wide audience of researchers and students. It contains concepts and results that appear in most aspects of the theory of Banach spaces. Although the style is highly condensed, many of the results are presented with complete, though somewhat sketchy proofs. The topics that are covered include Schauder bases, classical Banach spaces, Banach lattices, geometry of the norm, analysis in Banach spaces, finite-dimensional Banach spaces, local structure of infinite-dimensional spaces, some special classes of operators, and interpolation theory.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0970.46001].
