A subset \(S\) of a Banach lattice is called almost \(b\)-order bounded if, for every \(\epsilon >0\), there is a positive element \(u\) in the bidual of \(E\) and \(S\subset [-u,u]+ \epsilon B_{E''}\). This condition for \(E\) itself would correspond to almost order boundedness. This leads to defining an operator from a Banach space into a Banach lattice as \(b\)-semicompact if the image of the unit ball in is almost \(b\)-order bounded, an analogue to the semicompact operators. The paper then pursues an investigation of these ideas. It is shown, for example, that a subset of a Banach lattice \(E\) is \(L\)-weakly compact if and only if it is \(b\)-order bounded in an appropriate maximal ideal in the bidual of \(E\) and also if and only if the analogous condition is satisfied in \(E\). It is shown that the Banach lattice \(E\) is a KB-space is equivalent to the spaces of all \(L\)-weakly compact operators, all the semicompact operators and all the \(b\)-semicompact operators from a Banach space to \(E\) all being equal. A variety of other results and examples are presented.
