Let \(U^*\) be the complex unit disc without its center \(0\) and \(C^1(U)\) the class of complex functions \(f\) in the unit disc \(U\) having both the real and imaginary part continuously differentiable in \(U\). Let \( Df(z)=z\partial f/\partial z-\bar z\partial f/\partial\bar z\). The principal result of the paper is an extension of a previous result of the author concerning the notion of starlikeness for nonanalytic functions, notion which generalizes the well-known criterion for starlikeness for analytic functions \(f\) in the unit disc: \(\text{Re}zf'(z)/f(z)>0\; z\in U\): If \(A\) and \(B\) are complex numbers satisfying \(\| A\| >\| B\| \) and \(q\in C^1(U)\) with \(q(0)=0\) and \(\int_0^{2\pi}q(r{\text e}^{it})dt=0\) for \(0<r<1\), if \(p\in C^1(U^*)\), \(p(z)=\frac{Az-B\bar z}{Az+B\bar z}+q(z)\) for all \(z\in U^*\) and if the function \(\Phi :[0,1)\to\mathbb{C}\) is continuously differentiable on \([0,1)\), \(\Phi(0)=0=\Phi'(0)-1\), \(\Phi(r)\neq 0\) for \(0<r<1\), \(\Phi'\) is differentiable in \(0\) and \(\Phi''(0)=2[\frac{\partial q}{\partial z}(0)-\frac{\partial q}{\partial\bar z}(0)]\), then the function \(f:U\to\mathbb{C}\), \(f(z)=\frac{\Phi(r)}{r}\frac{Az+B\bar z}{A+B}\cdot\exp\int_0^{\theta}iq(r{\text e}^{it})dt,\;z=r{\text e}^{i\theta}\in U^*\) with \(f(0)=0\) is in \(C^1(U)\) and satisfies the equation \(Df(z)/f(z)=p(z),\;z\in U\) with the conditions: NEWLINE\[NEWLINEf(r)=\Phi(r),\;0<r<1,\; \frac{\partial f}{\partial z}(0)=\frac{A}{A+B},\; \frac{\partial f}{\partial\bar z}(0)=\frac{B}{A+B}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE Moreover, if \(\text{Re}\,p(z)>0\) in \(U^*\) and NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\text{Re}\left\{\overline {p(r{\text e}^{i\theta})}\left[\frac{r\Phi'(r)}{\Phi(r)}+ ir\int_0^{\theta}\frac{\partial}{\partial r }p(r{\text e}^{it})dt\right]\right\}>0,\,z=r{\text e}^{i\theta}\in U^*NEWLINE\]NEWLINE then \(f\) is starlike in \(U\).
