A classical version of the Müntz-Szász theorem asserts that if \(\alpha\) is a positive real number, \(f\in L^2(\mathbb{R})\) and \(\{n_k \}^{\infty}_{k=0}\) is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers, then the conditions \(\int^\alpha_0 x^{n_{k}}f(x)dx=0\) for any \(k\in\mathbb{N}\) imply that \(f=0\) on \([0,\alpha]\) if and only if \(\sum^{\infty}_{k=0}\frac{1}{n_k}=\infty\). This paper concerns extensions of this result to some classes of Lie groups. The authors prove several analogs of the Müntz-Szász theorem in which \(\mathbb R\) is replaced by the Euclidean motion groups \(G=\mathrm{SO}(n)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^{n}\) \((n\geq2)\) and by their universal coverings \(\mathrm{spin}(n)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^{n}\). Since \(\text{spin}(n)\) is compact if and only if \(n\geq3\), they consider this case separately from \(n=2\). Earlier D. C. Cook proved the if-part of an analog of the Müntz-Szász theorem for the matrix coefficients of the operator-valued Fourier transform on a restricted class of nilpotent Lie groups in [\textit{D. C. Cook}, J. Funct. Anal. 157, No. 2, 394--412, Art. No. FU983272 (1998; Zbl 0915.22005)]. The authors of the present paper study certain more general situations and also obtain if- and only if-results in some. In the proofs, the Plancherel formula and representation theory of the related groups play an important role.
