Irish mathematicians and their achievements are widely known but the association to Ireland is often overlooked. Irish mathematicians tend to be grouped with other English-speaking mathematicians. To change this situation the National Committee for Mathematics of the Royal Irish Academy made the proposal to produce this collection of biographies. The book will help to raise the level of awareness of mathematical activity in Ireland, particularly during the 19th century. The collection comprises 18 biographies of `mathematicians with Irish connections' and the biographies are written by practising `present day mathematicians with Irish connections'. The main criteria for inclusion in the book were that the subject had to be a mathematician who was born in Ireland or who worked there for a reasonable length of time, and who are now dead. The biographies of the following mathematicians are presented: NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINET. Harriot, W. R. Hamilton, R. Murphy, G. Boole, G. G. Stokes, G. Salmon, J. Casey, W. Thomson (Lord Kelvin), H. J. S. Smith, O. Reynolds, F. Y. Edgeworth, G. F. Fitzgerald, E. T. Whittaker, W. S. Gosset (Student), W. Heitler, D. R. Bates, A. Young, and P. B. Kennedy. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe biographies are written in an essayistic style not as a scientific biography. All of them are very readable and present a lot of information. Only about a half of them are complemented by references. A name index is also missing.
