Aerodynamics of blunt bodies. Physical foundations and practical applications (English)

One of the aims of aerodynamics is to reduce drag by avoiding flow separation and vortex formation. This problem is thoroughly investigated for classical slender bodies. However, in practice many problems are encountered with blunt bodies such as cars, railways and buildings. In the present book such problems are treated beginning with flow phenomena related to simple bodies like circular cylinders, spheres, ellipsoid and other axially symmetric bodies. The main part of the book examines the characteristics of wind protection for cars, railways and buildings. An essential way to improve the aerodynamic behaviour are wind tunnel tests on models of reduced size. But also tests on objects in real size are often used, and different methods of testing are described in this book. Numerical methods may help to improve the aerodynamic behaviour of the discussed objects, and the author recommends especially two numerical methods, namely the large eddy simulation method and lattice Boltzmann method. In the book they are applied to the aerodynamic design of cars. A bibliography of more than 700 titles will help for more detailed information. On balance, the book gives a very comprehensive description of flow problems for blunt bodies.
