A polynomial \(f\in\mathbb C[\,x_1,\ldots,x_n\,]\) is called a weighted homogeneous polynomial of type \((d:w_1,\ldots,w_n)\) where \(d\) and \(w_1,\ldots,w_n\) are fixed positive integers if it can be expressed as a linear combination of monomials \(x_1^{i_1}\cdots x_n^{i_n}\) with \(w_1i_1+\cdots+w_ni_n=d\). Let \(f\) be such a polynomial, and set \(A=\mathbb C[\,x_1,\ldots,x_n\,]/(\partial f/\partial x_1,\ldots,\partial f/\partial x_n)\). Then \(A\) is a graded algebra, and also the Lie algebra \(\mathrm{Der}(A)\) of derivations of \(A\) is graded. Now assume that \((V,0)=\{(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\in\mathbb C^n\mid f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)=0\}\) is an isolated singularity. The first author of the paper under review conjectured that in this case there is no non-zero negative weight derivation on \(A\). In order to prove this result, one may assume, by a result of \textit{K. Saito} [Invent. Math. 14, 123--142 (1971; Zbl 0224.32011)], that \(d\geq 2w_i\) for \(i\in\{1,\ldots,n\}\), hence, without loss of generality, that \(d\geq 2w_1\geq\cdots\geq 2w_ n\). Yau's conjecture was proved for \(n\leq 3\) in [\textit{H. Chen} et al., J. Algebra 172, No. 2, 243--254 (1995; Zbl 0839.32015)] and for \(n=4\) in [\textit{H. Chen}, Math. Ann. 303, No. 1, 95--107 (1995; Zbl 0836.32015)]. The main result of this paper is a proof of Yau's conjecture for \(n\geq 5\) under the additional hypothesis that \(w_n\geq w_1/2\).
