There is proved the 2-dimensional analogue of the adjoint triangle theorem of \textit{E. Dubuc} [Lect. Notes Math. 61, 69--91 (1968; Zbl 0172.02103)]. Like in the 1-dimensional case, the result is used to get the pseudomonadicity theorem of Le Creurer, Marmolejo and Vitale [\textit{I. J. Le Creurer} et al., J. Pure Appl. Algebra 173, No. 3, 293--313 (2002; Zbl 1003.18007)]. More applications are given.
