Some insights on bicategories of fractions: representations and compositions of 2-morphisms (English)

Categories of fractions and the calculus of fractions for categories is due to \textit{P. Gabriel} and \textit{M. Zisman} [Calculus of fractions and homotopy theory. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1967; Zbl 0186.56802)]. The construction gives a coinverter for certain 2-cells in the category of categories. With specific applications in mind, \textit{D. A. Pronk} [Compos. Math. 102, No. 3, 243--303 (1996; Zbl 0871.18003)] extended the ideas to bicategories. This paper simplifies the description of the equivalence relation on 2-cells and the constructions of associators, vertical and horizontal compositions. Inter alia, under certain conditions, this eliminates dependence of the constructions on the axiom of choice.
