Vortex motion equations in Bose-Einstein condensates: influence of rotating and density inhomogeneities (English)

In this paper, the equations of vortex motion in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates are derived. In this regard two different cases are considered: a uniform condensate in a rigid rotating cylinder and a nonuniform condensate in a rotating magnetic trap in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In both cases the Schrödinger equations are reduced to a convenient dimensionless form. The method of asymptotic expansion in small parameter is used to obtain two asymptotic solutions in two different spatial scales. By comparing the principle terms of these solutions, the desired equations are derived. The vortex motion equations for uniform condensate are reduced to the known vortex motion equations for an ideal liquid. The medium inhomogeneity involves additional terms in the equations. The vortex motion equations are obtained in the most general case: for any number of vortices, any vessel form, with and without rotation. In the particular case of one vortex, the equations are reduced to the known vortex precession equations. Motions of several vortices at different initial data are shown in graphs.
