This paper is a survey on the authors' previous works on the use of rational differential invariants in the problem of orbit separation, in contrast with the polynomial invariants. More precisely, the algebraic problem under consideration is reformulated as a problem concerning the solutions of a suitable differential equation. Secondly, the authors use a combination of the Lie-Tresse theorem and the Rosenlicht theorem in order to find the field of rational differential invariants. Three examples discuss the dependencies of some ternary forms.
