It was originally published in [Stat. Sci. 17, No. 1, 113--148 (2002; Zbl 1015.01505)]. As such it has been reproduced now in this collection and gives all of the work and life of Kanti Mardia, including a list of his most important publications up to around 1999. There has been a continuation of the interview in July 2014, given in Part II. The updated publication list is to be found on the pages 86--94 [Zbl 1338.01014].NEWLINENEWLINE In total, both contributions yield a very complete and informative insight not only into Kanti Mardia, but also into developments of statistics, theoretically and in practice, during around the second half of the 20th century.NEWLINENEWLINE The reviewer has not seen such a rather complete survey in respect of a mathematician before.
