Bhāskarācārya's mathematics and astronomy: an overview (English)
0 references
The article surveys the mathematical and astronomical works of Bhāskara II (Bhāskarācārya): {\parindent 5mmNEWLINE\begin{itemize}\item[--] the arithmetical \textit{Līlāvatī} (including also combinatorics and mensurational geometry);NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE\item[--] the algebraic \textit{Bījagaṇita} (with its developed algebraic symbolism and its treatment of the arithmetic of zero, the latter (reviewer's observation) from a present-day point of view perhaps best interpreted as an arithmetic of non-Archimedean magnitudes); NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE\item[--] the astronomical \textit{Grahagaṇita} (part of the \textit{Siddhāntaśiromaṇi}), which explains central astronomical concepts, the planetary model, and various astronomical calculations; with the explanatory commentary \textit{vaāsanābhasya};NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE\item[--] the \textit{Golādhyāyā}, also astronomical and the other part of the \textit{Siddhāntaśiromaṇi}, but dealing with definitions, conceptual matters, spherics and instruments;NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE\item[--] the \textit{Karaṇakutūhala}, containing useful astronomical and trigonometric algorithms. NEWLINENEWLINE\end{itemize}}NEWLINEThe descriptions are fairly concise but clear, and often made through examples; everything gives the original text in excerpt together with an English translation -- building on preceding translations (for instance, those of Colebrook) but with minor corrections where adequate. The relation to earlier Indian mathematics and astronomy and Bhāskara's is regularly pointed out.
