The authors consider a nonlinear diffusion equation. They prove that, for a suitable choice of the nonlinearity, a Lyapunov functional can be found which can be interpreted as the thermodynamic entropy, associated to an underlying particle system. This is done in the case where this system is the zero-range process, and the nonlinear diffusion equation is obtained in the hydrodynamic limit.
