On the best stability bounds for a weak star fixed point property (English)

A dual Banach space \((X, \|\cdot\|)\) has the weak\(^*\) fixed point property if, for every convex weak\(^*\)-compact subset \(C\) of \(X\), every nonexpansive mapping \(T:C\to C\) has a fixed point. In [Pac.\ J.\ Math.\ 90, 135--143 (1980; Zbl 0454.47046)], \textit{T.-C. Lim} proved that \((\ell_1, \|\cdot\|_1)\), considered as the dual of \((c_0, \|\cdot\|_\infty)\), has the weak\(^*\) fixed point property and that there exists an equivalent dual norm \(|\cdot|\) on \(\ell_1\) such that the Banach-Mazur distance between \((\ell_1, \|\cdot\|_1)\) and \((\ell_1, |\cdot|)\) is two and \((\ell_1, |\cdot|)\) fails to have the weak\(^*\) fixed point property.NEWLINENEWLINEIn the article under review, the authors extend Lim's technique [loc. cit.] to prove the following more general result: If \(p\) is an equivalent norm on \((\ell_1, \|\cdot\|_1)=(c_0, \|\cdot\|_\infty)^*\) and \(\varepsilon>0\), then there exists an equivalent norm \(|\cdot|\) on \(\ell_1\) such that the Banach-Mazur distance between \((\ell_1,p)\) and \((\ell_1, |\cdot|)\) is less than \(2+\varepsilon\) and \((\ell_1, |\cdot |)\) fails to have the \(\sigma(\ell_1,c_0)\)-fixed point property. In other words, for every renorming of \(\ell_1\), the constant \(2\) is the best stability bound for the preservation of the \(\sigma(\ell_1,c_0)\)-fixed point property. The authors provide similar upper bounds for stability constants for the \(\tau\)-fixed point property on Banach spaces endowed with certain topologies \(\tau\). For example, if \(\mu\) is a \(\sigma\)-finite measure and \(L_1(\mu)\) is endowed with the topology of convergence locally in measure, for every equivalent norm \(p\) on \(L_1(\mu)\), the stability constant for the preservation of the \(\tau\)-fixed point property is less than or equal to \(2\).
