In [``Stability of periodic waves of finite amplitude on the surface of a deep fluid'', J. Appl. Mech. Tech. Phys. 9, No. 2, 190--194 (1968; \url{doi:10.1007/BF00913182})], \textit{V. E. Zahkarov} for the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) approximation makes wrong prediction for the water wave problem in case of small surface tension and spatially periodic boundary conditions. It is the purpose of this paper to show that in general this approximation is not valid without further assumptions. The authors construct a counter example showing that the NLS approximation makes wrong predictions for the water wave problem in case of small surface tension and spatially periodic boundary conditions.
