    This paper is concerned with existence and uniqueness of positive solutions for \(-\Delta_p u=\frac{f(x)}{u^\gamma}\) in \(\Omega\), subject to \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\). Here, \(\Omega\subset{\mathbb R}^N\) is a smooth and bounded domain, \(\gamma>0, p>1\), \(f\geq 0\). The main result regarding the existence of a weak solution establishes that if one of the conditions below hold {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(p>1\), \(\gamma\geq 1\), \(f\in L^1(\Omega)\); \item [(ii)] \(0<\gamma<1\), \(1<p\leq N\), \(f\in L^m(\Omega)\) for some \(m=m(N,p,\gamma)>1\); \item [(iii)] \(0<\gamma<1\), \(p>N\), \(f\in L^1(\Omega)\); \end{itemize}} then the above problem admits a weak solution. The main novelty concerns the uniqueness of a weak solution. First, the authors obtain that for all \(\gamma>0\), \(f\in L^1(\Omega)\) the solution is indeed unique under the assumptions \(\Omega\) is star-shaped with respect to the origin. Finally, under no geometric restriction on the domain, it is proved that the uniqueness still holds if one of the following conditions on data is imposed {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(0<\gamma\leq 1\), \(f\in L^1(\Omega)\); \item [(ii)] \(\gamma>1\), \(m>N/p\), \(1<p<N\), \(f\in L^m(\Omega)\); \item [(iii)] \(\gamma>1\), \(p=N\), \(f\in L^m(\Omega)\); \item [(iv)] \(\gamma>1\), \(p>N\), \(f\in L^1(\Omega)\). \end{itemize}}
