The aim of this paper is the extension to the class of totally nonpositive matrices of results known for the class of totally positive matrices which are based on the bidiagonal factorization of those matrices, due to \textit{P. Koev} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 29, No. 3, 731--751 (2007; Zbl 1198.65057)]. In addition, the application of those results to the accurate computation of the inverse matrix is also addressed.
