In his fundamental work [Ann. Inst. Fourier 54, No. 3, 499--630 (2004; Zbl 1062.14014)], \textit{F. Campana} introduced the notion of compact Kähler manifolds that are special, i.e. manifolds \(X\) that do not admit a (meromorphic) fibration \(f: X \dashrightarrow Z\) such that the orbifold base \((Z, \Delta_f)\) is of general type. Since their introduction geometric orbifolds have been studied and used by many authors, but most basic properties of special manifolds are still open problems. The main result of this paper is the following statement: let \(X\) be a complex projective manifold that is special, and let \(F\) be a general fibre of the Albanese map \(\alpha: X \rightarrow \text{Alb}(X)\). Then \(F\) is also special. As an application the authors show that if two compact Kähler threefolds \(X\) and \(Y\) have the same universal cover, then \(X\) is special if and only if this holds for \(Y\). \newline The proof of the main theorem is based on a partial result on the orbifold version of the famous \(C_{n,m}\)-conjecture: if \((X, D)\) is a geometric orbifold, and \(X \rightarrow A\) a fibration onto an abelian variety (or variety of maximal Albanese dimension) such that \((F, D|_F)\) is of general type, then some multiple of the canonical divisor \(K_X+D\) defines a fibration such that the orbifold base is of general type. This theorem strengthens a result by \textit{C. Birkar} and \textit{J. A. Chen} [Adv. Math. 270, 206--222 (2015; Zbl 1308.14014)].
