The paper is translated from the Russian original [Geodezia i kartografia 8, 52--55 (2007)] by M. Nádeníková and Z. Nádeník. The authors use the chronology reconstructed in Newton's little-known book to suggest new historical understanding of the common origins of geometry, geodesy and astronomy in ancient Egypt. The article also discusses the reception of Newton's ideas on chronology, which deviated from the more usually accepted version by J. J. Scaliger (1540--1609). The role of Voltaire in the reception of Newton's ideas, studied by the second author, is highlighted.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1330.01007].
