Let \(A\) be an elliptic pseudo-differential operator on a smooth manifold \(M\). Local index theorem of Connes-Moscovici is based on the smoothing operator \(R(A)={\mathbf{P}}-{\mathbf{e}}\) of A. Here \textbf{P} and \textbf{e} are idempotent and the distribution kernel of \(R(A)\) is situated in an arbitrary small neighborhood of the diagonal in \(M\times M\). The author says these are merits of \(R(A)\). But since \(R(A)\) is not an idempotent, it does not have genuine Connes-Karoubi-Chern character. Even if \(R(A)\) is idempotent, its Chern character would belong to the cyclic homology of the algebra of smoothing operators with arbitrary support, which is trivial.NEWLINENEWLINE To overcome these difficulties, the author proposes two ideas. The first is to localize the cyclic homology complex of the algebra of smoothing operators to the separable subalgebra \(\Lambda=\mathbb C+\mathbb C{\mathbf{e}}\). Then it is shown that \(R(A)\) has a genuine Chern character (Theorem 7.2 and Definition 7.3). The second is to localize the ordinary cyclic homology by filtering the cyclic complex of the algebra based on the support of the chains. The local cyclic homology of the algebra of smoothing operators is defined in the same way as the Alexander-Spanier cohomology (\S6). A reformulation of the local index theorem using these ideas is given as Theorem 8.1.NEWLINENEWLINE Before to state these results, \(K\)-theory of Banach algebra (\S2), local index theorem of Connes-Moscovici (\S3) and Hochschid and cyclic homology (\S5) are reviewed. In \S4, using symbols of \(A\) and its pseudo-differential parametrix and bundles acting on them, a quasi-local residue bundle \(\mathfrak r\) on \(T^\ast(M)\) is constructed. Then, as periodic cyclic homology classes, the Chern character of \(\sigma\), the symbol of \(A\), is expressed by using \(\mathfrak r\) (Theorem 4.3). Taking into account the module structure of the Schatten ideals in the algebra of operators of \(L^2\)-sections of vector bundles over \(M\), local cyclic homology and \(K\)-theory of Schatten ideals are constructed [\textit{N. Teleman}, Trends in Mathematics, 251--265 (2008; Zbl 1143.18015)]. The author says this local cyclic homology differs from Puschnigg's local cyclic homology [\textit{M. Puschnigg}, Doc. Math., J. DMV 8, 143--245 (2003; Zbl 1038.46058)]. These are stated in \S6 without detailed explanation. Then the construction of the genuine Chern character of \(A\) and a reformulation of the local index theorem are given in \S7 and \S8. In \S9, the last section, further problems in this direction are stated.NEWLINENEWLINE As the author says in the abstract, this paper is a preliminary work and there remains mistypes. But the author's argument is interesting and must be fruitful.
