Cohomogeneity one actions on symmetric spaces of noncompact type (Q2861476)

An isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold is said to be of cohomogeniety one if the corresponding orbit space is one-dimensional or, equivalently, if the principal orbits are hypersurfaces. This article characterizes cohomogeniety-one actions on noncompact Riemannian symmetric spaces in terms of orbit equivalence. Several examples are given, and the cohomogeniety-one actions on some symmetric spaces are classified.
