The author shows that derived equivalent smooth, complex, projective varieties may have distinct fundamental groups. More precisely he exhibits a simply-connected Calabi-Yau threefold \(X\), with a free action by a finite group \(G\) such that \(X/G\) is derived equivalent to \(X\).
