      Let \(R, S\) be bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \(\mathcal H \). Then \(S\) belongs to the \textit{Helton class of} \(R\) if and only if, for some integer \(n\), it satisfies the intertwining condition NEWLINE\[NEWLINEC(R,S)^n := \sum\limits_{j=0}^n (-1)^{n-j} \begin{pmatrix} n \\ j \end{pmatrix} R^j S^{n-j} = 0.NEWLINE\]NEWLINENEWLINEThe author considers block operator matrices NEWLINE\[NEWLINER = \begin{pmatrix} R_1 & R_2 \\ 0 & R_3 \end{pmatrix}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE and NEWLINE\[NEWLINES = \begin{pmatrix} S_1 & S_2 \\ 0 & S_3 \end{pmatrix}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE on a Hilbert space \(H_1\oplus H_2\) with bounded operators \(R_j, S_j\) for \(j=1,2,3\). Under the condition that \(S_j\) is in the Helton class of \(R_j\) for \(j=1,3\), some spectral inclusions for \(S\) and \(R\) are shown. Moreover, if \(R\) has Bishop's property \((\beta)_\varepsilon\), then so does \(S\), provided that \(R_1R_2 = R_2R_3\). This leads to a condition for \(S\) having a nontrivial invariant subspace.
