A class of subshifts of \(\{0,1,\dots,n-1\}^{\mathbb Z}\) defined by forbidding the arithmetical sum of finite words to exceed a value depending on the length (thus designated bounded density shift) is introduced, and a general development of their properties is made with specific attention to their relationships to the class of \(\beta\)-shifts.
