This paper (in Dutch) is aimed at advanced high school teachers and explains the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in historical perspective, starting with examples of elliptic curves from Fermat, then explaining how to count points modulo primes, up to the definition of \(L\)-series. The paper ends with a sketch of the results of Gross, Zagier and Kolyvagin. None of the more recent ``arithmetic statistics'' (proving that the conjecture holds for a certain portion of elliptic curves) is included.
